Gundam Heavyarms
(Universal Century Style)
1/100 Master Grade 'RX-78-5 Gundam' Modified
Super crazy? Maybe. But definitely not compared to the professionals.
After looking at all those Net modeler's creations, I also had a little inspiration of my own when my good friend bought me
RX-78-5 for my birthday, especially looking at the giant gattling gun. It is also one way for me to improve on my customization
skills, as this time I also used miliput to do up some areas. I can say I learnt quite a bit from this experience, and
a hell lot of fun out of it. My idea of a 'what kind of a mecha is this?' has finally appeared. It is not totally Gundam Heavyarms,
only that I incorporated it into Universal Century style, where 'practical' is more useful then for 'decoration' sake, only
for the giant beam gattling gun... Here we go, onto the areas of customization :
1. Head
The only obvious areas done to the head is the additional antenaes added to the side of the head.
The supporting area was done up with miliput, while the antenaes itself were with thumbtacks. The thumbtacks had its round
'head' cut off and the sharp end filed until it is even. The ventilation holes at the two cheeks were carved a bit deeper
to look more real then how it originally was. The foil stickers were used for the auxiliary cameras on the front and rear
of the head.
2. Chest
The chest was made heavier and fuller with miliput first to form the basis of the shape. After
it is totally cured, I continued to file a bit to make it more even before I put on plastic sheets to finalize the shape.
The white part was done with the plastic sheets and the 'joint' areas done by cutting the polycap plastic as it is stronger
to hold on. The chest opens, but there is nothing inside (!?) as I do not have the skill or idea to do anything, so if you
do have any idea, do tell me about it ;).
3. Arms
The shoulder pads where turned the other way around and plastic sheets were added to add detail
to the shoulders. Its right arm was changed to a normal arm without the additional armor from RX-78-5. I added two layers
of the thicker plastic sheets to add volume to the forearm. If not, it will appear to be very thin.
4. Legs
No customization needed, only adding panel lines on the knee pad which is similar to Gundam
Heavyarms.
5. Weaponry
The Beam Gatling Gun remained as it was. The shield added comes from the lower end of the RX-78-5
shield. For it to be fixed onto the gun, I had to add some layers of platic sheet on the side of the gun so that the shield
stays firmly on the gun. The shield is added to resemble that of the original Gundam Heavyarms. The dagger was customized
with the handle of the beam sabre as the dagger's handle. The knife was done with plastic sheets (no kidding). The leg rocket
launchers was entirely scratchbuilt. The rockets were made from the sprues and the launcher was done with platic sheets.
